Dealing with Spirits

There may be times that we feel that our homes are visited by some form of spirit. When this happens it can be unsettling and leave us feeling fear. The experience is very real. It may be the case that no one else sees or experiences anything but we do.

When Jesus was here on earth He attributed many things to these “spirits”, even some forms of sickness. He and the apostles who learnt from Him gave keys to dealing with these things.

The basics are found in relationship, with God. As a person grows in confidence in their relationship with God the Father they come to “know” that God wants good for them, and will protect them from evil.

Jesus said:

Mat 7:7-11 Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. Would any of you give your hungry child a stone, if the child asked for some bread? Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask.

The above scripture shows us that us as earthly parents “provide” for our children, and because of our love give them what they need. In the same way as we continue to seek God He will grant us our needs. One of our needs is peace, spirits rob our peace. God will grant us peace, and remove spirits, as we ask Him.

If our prayers are not instantly answered, the following can explain why. The disciples of Jesus were in one case unable to drive an evil spirit away from a possessed boy, and they asked why? Jesus said:

Mat 17:19-20 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, Why were we not able to send it out? And he says to them, Because of your little faith: for truly I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Be moved from this place to that; and it will be moved; and nothing will be impossible to you.

Spirits are cruel, they enjoy bringing fear. And they will not leave if they think we are in any way uncertain of our footing. It is faith in God that gives us our power over evil. We need to be certain in our own hearts of our standing and place of authority.

Jesus said we need faith, to move the impossible situations, in our life. Faith starts with knowing our standing with God. We can have confidence to access God’s help, based upon His offer.

Joh 3:16-18 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned.

Jesus wants us to have faith in Him, He gave His life up as an offering for sin, forgiving us all our errors, so that we can enter into heaven, and relationship with God.

Isa 53:5-6 He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well. All of us were like sheep that had wandered off. We had each gone our own way, but the LORD gave him the punishment we deserved.

This offering enables us to become children of God, and share in all that comes from God.

Rom 8:15-17 For you did not get the spirit of servants again to put you in fear, but the spirit of sons was given to you, by which we say, Dear, Father. The Spirit is witness with our spirit that we are children of God: And if we are children, we have a right to a part in the heritage; a part in the things of God, together with Christ;

Knowing that God sees us as His children, that we can come before Him as a Dear Father, who will give us the things we ask, we can have confidence that God does not want us troubled by evil. We can ask, and ask confidently for Him to remove evil from our presence. As we stand boldly evil will flee.

Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
